Inflammation is the body's natural way of healing an injury. When an injury doesn't fully heal, there is chronic damage without inflammation. Prolotherapy essentially tricks the body into repeating a new wave of healing. It works by injecting an irritating substance, such as dextrose or sugar water, into an injured structure to stimulate a healing response. The substance is often mixed with lidocaine and sodium morrhuate (cod liver oil extract). Common injuries treated with Prolotherapy include chronic tendinosis, such as tennis elbow, and chronic low back pain.
